Oakton’s Health Careers Education Center in Evanston provides access to high-quality healthcare education to meet critical workforce needs in the region.
Located in Endeavor Health Evanston Hospital’s COS Building, 2500 Ridge Ave., the Center features advanced classrooms and laboratories for three healthcare-focused Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree programs.
Dedicated labs with state-of-the-art training equipment provide hands-on experience and high-quality instruction for the following specialties:
Cardiac Sonography: The program prepares students for an entry-level position in a hospital setting, doctor's office or a diagnostic imaging facility. Students learn the science behind ultrasound imaging and how to use ultrasound equipment for cardiac scanning with the guidance of experienced practitioners. Through lab training and an externship, students are prepared to perform important tests such as the adult echocardiography exam.
Radiography: Students learn how to safely operate radiology equipment with hands-on experience in our cutting-edge labs and guidance from experienced faculty. Radiographic positioning is practiced hands-on in the lab upon both phantoms and students as well as in clinical practicums. Students demonstrate radiation safety, proper infection control, and use critical thinking and problem-solving for radiographic procedures.
Surgical Technology: Students learn to be part of the team that ensures the smooth implementation of surgeries and patient care. Surgical technologists are responsible for setting up surgical environments and the proper arrangement of instruments, maintaining sterility, and managing equipment and supplies. In Oakton’s model surgical space as well as in externships, students learn surgical aseptic technique, surgical procedural steps, anatomy, physiology and pathology for multiple specialties.
